Our Curriculum

Literacy

Noorat P.S believes strong literacy skills are essential to the development of all students, so that they may become confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. We have designed a Literacy Program that is systematic and comprehensive, drawing upon best classroom practice that incorporates research-based programs and strategies such as Sounds Write, The Big 6 of Reading and 6+1 Traits of Writing. Meaningful reading and writing opportunities are embedded into our daily practice and support children to reach their full potential.

With thorough assessment and planning in collaborative teams, individual student needs are catered for. They receive explicit instruction at their point of need within small groups and individual conferences.

Every child has access to our extensive library which contains a wide-variety of literature to engage students and support their reading progress.

We are currently participating in the Speech Pathologists in Schools program which aims to increase teacher understanding, skills and confidence to support children who have speech, language and communication needs.

Numeracy

At Noorat our teachers thoroughly plan to provide targeted, sequential lessons that are scaffolded and differentiated to cater for individual student needs. We develop the numeracy skills of our students by building understanding, fluency, reasoning, modelling and problem solving.

Appropriate materials are used to support learning and build deeper understanding. Students learn to think flexibly by applying a range of strategies when solving authentic tasks. We teach vocabulary as children develop the essential numeracy skills required for their personal and professional life.

technology

Noorat Primary School provide the students with 1:1 iPads, Cisco WebEx interactive boards, smart boards and Apple TVs so students can access all facets of learning in the curriculum. We incorporate technology into our classrooms to enhance learning whilst maintaining the importance of teaching traditional values, setting high expectations and being safe & responsible users of technology.

Noorat Primary School is a registered eSmart School using the eSmart guiding framework to manage cyber safety and wellbeing.

STEAM / Science

STEAM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEAM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.

STEAM is about providing students with a learning environment that promotes problem-solving and focuses on real life applications. Students use technology such as iPads, LEGO, microscopes, robotics and 3D printer within our specialist STEAM room to aide their planning, constructing and assessing of engaging and relevant topics.

THE ARTS

Our Arts program focusses on the creative elements of visual art, drama, dance, media and music. Students create and respond to artworks in many forms using a wide array of materials, techniques and technologies.

We explore materials, techniques, technologies and processes to create art, drawing ideas from other artists. Students work independently and collaboratively with their classmates and teacher to create meaningful pieces.

KITCHEN & GARDEN

Noorat Primary School’s Kitchen Garden program offers the opportunity for students to work together in teams. Students share the responsibility for maintaining our gorgeous grounds and yards along with our gardens and trees. Our students plant a range of seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs which they take care of throughout the year and utilise in our cooking sessions. Students are able to collect the eggs from our very own chickens once they have been laid and use them, along with the fresh produce we grow to create and cook fabulous meals which we enjoy eating together.

HEALTH & PE

The Health Curriculum at Noorat P.S encompasses the topic Personal, Social and Community Health. Students explore, investigate and understand:

LOTE

All students at Noorat P.S learn AUSLAN in LOTE. In a 30 minute weekly session, students are taught how to sign so we can communicate with the hard of hearing community.

Students are introduced to AUSLAN with a focus on communicating in AUSLAN and developing an understanding of the challenges faced by our hard of hearing community.
