School Council

The Noorat PS School Council plays a significant role in the life of the school and is one of the many ways you may become involved in the life of the school.

The Noorat PS School Council has nine members - 6 elected parent representatives, one DE representative, the school principal and one community member. All elected members serve a two-year term.

The council meets eight times per year. Teamwork, co-operation, collaboration, trust and confidentiality are the hallmarks of effective councils, and we are fortunate that our councils have been highly effective over many years.

If being on school council appeals to you, we suggest you have a chat to one of our current councillors or contact our school principal, Ilona Watkins.  You might also wish to visit the DE website.

OUR 2024 NOORAT PRIMARY SCHOOL COUNCILLORS ARE:

The Role of School Council

In Victoria, School Councils currently have a variety of roles. Noorat Primary School Council's roles include:

  • determining the general educational policy of the school

  • developing the School Strategic Plan (a document that sets the 4 year direction for schools)

  • reporting annually to the School community which, at Noorat, occurs at the Annual General Meeting in March

  • acting as a conduit regarding whole school issues, policies and practices

  • approving and monitoring the school budget

  • developing the student code of conduct

  • appointing the Principal and

  • generally stimulating interest in the school

What the School Council is not responsible for includes:

  • the day-to-day operations of the school, (such as staffing arrangements),

  • concerns relating to individual students,

  • complaints about teachers,

  • implementation of policies.

For further information on the role of school council, see the DE publication Improving School Governance.
